“… a young girl, apparently just awakened, sat by the window, holding the ribbons of her white bonnet in both hands. Bright and thoughtful, all filled with a graceful and complex inner life to which Levin was a stranger, she looked through him at the glowing sunrise.” — Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy.
Anna Karenina (2012) Joe Wright
You may, by indiscretion, give the world occasion to talk about you.
I watched Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina last night (yep I couldn’t wait until next month) and I really liked it! It was a bit weird at the start the concept of the theatre and the constant ‘butterfly-like’ movements of some characters, but I enjoyed it. It seemed like a musical first, but then you get used to it.
My favourite scene was without a doubt Kitty’s debutante ball scene, with all the couples dancing and the slow motion take when Vronsky and Anna dance together for the first time. The scene at the Opera where Princess Myagkaya holds Anna’s hand while people gives her the cold shoulder was excellent as well.
PUT MICHELLE DOCKERY IN MORE MOVIES DAMMIT
Thomas Howes, Michelle Dockery and Holliday Grainger were fresh, wonderful surprises and helped to get away from familiar faces like Jude, Matthew and Keira (the latter btw made a VERY nice job—-I didn’t particularly trust her) but everybody was excellently picked for the roles. Kelly MacDonald was exactly how I imagined Dolly.
The one that didn’t satisfy me was Ruth Wilson. She’s so talented that idk what happened there. She was just…meh
The whole ‘train affair’ was very well handed too. All in all, I think the script was great bc adapting a 900-page book for a 2-hour movie is not an easy job and as a reader, I was pretty content with it
So yeah, go see it!

She says Kitty was always meant to be your wife, and will be.

“How strange it was to think that he, who such a short time ago dared not believe in the happiness of her loving him, now felt unhappy because she loved him too much!”
